Mac Tíre Apothecary is a traditional herbal medicine clinic rooted in Gorey, Co. Wexford. It was established in 2021 following my 5 years of apprenticeship and clinical training at the Plant Medicine School, Wexford. My training involved working alongside some of the most experienced herbal practitioners in the UK & Ireland. I am a fully insured member of the Irish Registry of Herbalists.
What is Herbal Medicine?
Herbal medicine is the world’s oldest form of healthcare, and today is still the primary form of healthcare for 80% of the world’s population. Herbal medicine is supported by both a robust body of scientific research and thousands of years of stories passed through traditional cultures all over the world. It is a safe, effective medicine for all manner of ailments, and is also excellent for optimising our health as a part of self-care. Working with plants for our health and wellbeing is a part of who we are, and has been for as long as we have been here.
Some of the conditions very commonly and successfully treated with herbal medicine include:
• Headaches and migraines
• Depression, anxiety and sleep disturbance
• Asthma, sinusitis and recurrent infections
• Poor circulation, varicose veins and angina
• Digestive problems, constipation and IBS
• Irregular periods, PMS and menopausal symptoms
• Infertility and fertility support
• Recurrent cystitis and prostate enlargement
• Arthritis and fibromyalgia
• Auto-immune issues
• Skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis and acne
• Helping to balance energetic patterns of disharmony
Why should I consider Herbal Medicine?
Though herbs can provide excellent primary and complementary treatment for a wide range of people with a wide range of conditions, herbs have traditionally also been given to those who are healthy in order to optimise their health and keep them healthy. These ‘wellness consultations’ involve an exploration of your constitution – getting to understand the areas of your being which become more easily affected by adversity, and indeed the aspects of your being which show where your resilience lies. In essence, we can then take herbs to support both our strengths and our weaknesses.
Herbal medicine, diet and lifestyle choices can be used to reduce the likelihood of some inheritable diseases from occurring (including neurodegeneration, joint problems and more). Herbal medicine can also be used to support athletic performance safely and effectively, and to help support us in times of stress and overwork.
What happens in a consultation?
The clinic is currently operating both online and in-person at The Palms Health & Wellbeing Centre in Gorey, Co. Wexford. In a consultation we will have an in-depth discussion around your health and well being. I will approach current issues going on for you with the highest standards of care and professionalism, using diagnostic techniques from western orthodox medicine, traditional Chinese medicine and other healing systems. Following this, herbs are prescribed in the form of a tincture, tea blend or topical treatment and patients are followed up with after 3-4 weeks to check in on their treatment progress and to make adjustments to the medicine if needed. Nutritional and lifestyle guidance are also given to support the treatment. Where orthodox medicines are being taken, herbal medicine can still provide excellent complementary support, both for the underlying issue but also for potential side effects from taking long term medications. I am fully trained in herb-drug interactions and in herbal contraindications.
